This is the only before picture I could find of the study. The previous owner (heir to the family who built the house) had used this as a music room, but we thought with the built in book shelves that it would be a good study.
It looked a bit better after we moved our furniture and books in.
When we wallpapered the rest of the downstairs, we couldn't decide on what to do in this room. It is the smallest public room downstairs and the bookshelves take up most of the wall space, so it seemed a waste to use expensive wall paper only to cover them up with shelves. We finally decided to paint the walls a red, so what shows has a lot of impact. As you can see, this is my husband's room primarily. He was a history major in college, has developed a local battlefield and is a re-enactor. I made the uniform on the valet in the picture above. As you can see, these are pictures from Christmas. We decorate this room with a Nutcracker theme since the nutcrackers are soldiers.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE cozy red Studies or Dens...in fact, seeing one on an historic home tour one Christmas, is what convinced me to paint my dining room red. I would rather have done that to a study, but didn't have one to do it to...and I was determined to get a red room in my home, somewhere! (LOL) I love how this looks and am totally in awe that you made the uniform!!! Wow! I surely hope your gorgeous home is on tour in your town/city at Christmas...because it would be a delight for all who enter! Great Met Monday post! Susan

ReplyDeleteWe love history at our house also. I guess that is why we were attracted to an older home. My daughter just finished her PhD in History so I guess we have passed our love of it on to another generation. Please come by. I posted some pics of my sunroom. It is definitely the most modern room in the house because we haven't wanted to put any money into it- since only family sees it---

Jewel your study/ library looks wonderful- what an awesome metamorhosis took place! I love the library ladder. I have thought it might be fun to have one in my study with those floor to ceiling shelves I have.

I love that you, too, had the purist-colonial phase. I think it was good training! Now we can go a little more over the top, but still remember what it feels like to be restrained. :-)
